The architectural complex of Pisa’s Piazza del Duomo: when safety is at the service of culture
image
L’Opera della Primaziale Pisana (OPA) is responsible for the protection and management of one of the most prestigious architectural complexes in Italy: Piazza del Duomo in Pisa. Working together with EL.MO., OPA was able to solve a major challenge: ensuring the safety and security of the site, without compromising the integrity and beauty of these cultural symbols.

Is it possible to secure one of the most important symbols of Italian artistic production without compromises? Yes, and this is demonstrated by the project developed by Opera Primaziale Pisana (OPA) with EL.MO, a historic company operating in the Italian and international field of active safety. OPA is committed every day to the conservation and preservation of one of the most famous artistic and cultural sites in Italy, that attracts tourists and experts from all over the world every day: Pisa's Piazza del Duomo, which houses masterpieces such as the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Camposanto, museums and the city’s unmistakable Leaning Tower.

The need: safety without aesthetic compromises

Faced with the need to protect the site from vandalism, possible terrorist threats and fire risks, while maintaining the harmony, elegance and stylistic uniformity of the monuments as intact as possible, the challenge proved complex. After establishing rigorous criteria for a complete and discreet intervention, OPA sought the partner who could best meet the need to protect and safekeep the architectural site.

The needs were divided into various areas of action:

INTRUSION DETECTION/ACCESS CONTROL, monitor the presence of intruders when closed and receive immediate notification of the presence of any unauthorised people, as well as limit access to some areas closed to the public.

CCTV, have a centralised view of all the cameras located at each point of interest, as well as count the number of people in some pre-established areas and analyse some suspicious behaviours.

FIRE PREVENTION, detect fires starting and the presence of smoke in the areas of interest.

SUPERVISION, check the integrated functioning of the systems at all times.

EL.MO. was able to interpret the customer's needs and translate them into a fully customised security system. The selected devices were designed to blend in with the artistic context, with neutral colours and compact dimensions, thus preserving the beauty of the architectural complex.

The collaboration between Opera della Primaziale Pisana and EL.MO. is an example of how important it is for customer and supplier to work together to create a customised and cutting-edge solution capable of addressing security challenges in complex contexts.

Sicurezza 2025 is the ideal opportunity to discover and evaluate innovative technologies, meet industry leaders and find the perfect solution for every need, from intrusion detection to advanced video surveillance.
