OVER TO THE COMPANIES. Security for critical infrastructure: the future lies in intelligent integration
image
In the current context, the security of critical infrastructures – such as power plants, water networks, transport and telecommunications facilities – has become a strategic priority for public and private companies. We talked to Motorola Solutions and TKH Security for their take on this, which involves two different approaches but a common message: the future of security in critical infrastructures is played out on a dynamic balance between technology, people and processes. And every second can make a difference.

In the current context, the security of critical infrastructures – such as power plants, water networks, transport and telecommunications facilities – has become a strategic priority for public and private companies. The increasing digitalisation and interconnectivity of physical assets exposes these vital systems to risks that are proving more and more sophisticated: sabotage, unauthorised access, cyber attacks, natural events. Protecting these sensitive nodes is essential not only to ensure business continuity, but also to preserve citizen safety, economic stability, and environmental integrity.

In this scenario, advanced video surveillance technologies, critical communications, intelligent sensors and integrated remote management platforms are redesigning security paradigms, shifting the focus from a reactive to a proactive approach, based on threat anticipation and real-time response.

Two leaders – Motorola Solutions and TKH Security – offer complementary perspectives on how to meet this challenge.

Motorola Solutions: "An integrated ecosystem to act before the risk materialises"

With 95 years of experience in mission-critical communications, Motorola Solutions has extended its expertise to include video surveillance and access control, creating a scalable and interconnected security ecosystem.

“We have developed a system that integrates voice, video and intelligent analytics to prevent incidents before they happen,” explains Sirio Magliocca, Channel Sales Executive at Motorola Solutions. "Our cameras can recognise a piece of luggage abandoned at the station or a person crossing the tracks, generating real-time alarms that reach both the operations centre and the operators in the field."

It's not just about providing cutting-edge technologies, but about ensuring seamless interoperability between systems: "Our strength is integration. We don’t just sell devices, we sell solutions designed for every context, from dams to airports. And with the acquisition of companies like Vigilant, we have also strengthened our offerings in the AI and cybersecurity space."

Cybersecurity is in fact an integral part of the Motorola Solutions strategy: "Our systems are encrypted, NIS2-compliant, and every component is designed to reduce network access points. For us, safety is 'by design' and each device carries out safety checks, even at simple start-up," underlines Magliocca.

TKH Security: "Control what is far away, protect what is invisible"

TKH Security, on the other hand, offers a specific solution for one of the most overlooked vulnerabilities: unmonitored technical rooms, such as street cabins or pumping stations, which are critical for the energy, water, transport, and telecommunications sectors.

"With our Asset & Site Management (ASM) platform, we offer environmental supervision, video surveillance and access control in a single, customisable graphical interface," explains Denis Nadal, CEO of TKH Security. "Any anomaly, from a temperature change to an attempted intrusion, is instantly notified to the control panel."

The strengths of the system include its turnkey and modular approach: "ASM is scalable and integrable. We can enable remote maintenance access via smartphone, without physical keys. And all this in compliance with GDPR, NDAA and NIS2 regulations."

This convergence of sensors, distributed intelligence, and secure connectivity not only increases the resilience of infrastructure, but also optimises the operating costs, making the management of hundreds – or thousands – of remote assets sustainable.

Towards a new culture of safety

Both Motorola Solutions and TKH emphasise that security today is no longer just about defence from external threats, but also involves management of business continuity, environmental protection and people's well-being.

"We no longer sell 'video monitors', but solutions that integrate safety and security. Our goal is to put technology at the service of people: from the operators in the field to citizens," says Sirio Magliocca.

"We have created a unique platform on the market, which allows users to view and manage every detail in real time. It's the only way to stay ahead of failures, incidents or attacks," adds TKH Security.
