Thermal solutions: the measure of innovation

The press started to document the use of this security technology right from the start of the pandemic. Body temperature has emerged as an important factor for identifying persons at risk prior to applying more rigorous controls. From airports to "red zones" and the largest businesses, thermal cameras quickly became part of our everyday life.

Useful for monitoring individuals in a crowd, these systems are today used in ever more settings: airports, ports, railway stations, hospitals, companies and shopping centres.

Intelligent algorithms enable these devices to quickly measure the body temperature of any individual without being confused by other sources of heat in the spectrum. They can also be used to monitor areas at risk of crowding and to identify groups of people who are not observing social distancing norms. Portable, hand-held models also make it easy for the operator – security staff, police, etc. – to use them in any setting.

Among manufacturers, Hikvision proposed its fixed and portable thermal cameras for quickly screening body temperatures during the lockdown, without the need for close contact with the operator and hence always at a safe distance.

Bi-Spectrum thermal cameras use two intelligent algorithms - AI Face Detection and Body Temperature Compensation - combined with Deep Learning to guarantee a minimal percentage of error, and can detect a range of skin temperatures ranging from 30 to 45°C, while ignoring any other local sources of heat: for instance, they can distinguish body temperature measured off the skin from the heat of a cup of tea. Operator safety is assured by the ability to measure body temperature from a distance of more than a metre, capturing up to 30 faces at a time, with a thermal sensitivity (NETD, noise equivalent temperature difference) of less than 0.04°C and a precision of less than 0.5°C, which is reduced to ±0.3°C with the aid of a Black Body. To guarantee data security, thermal cameras send the body temperature data to the server using an https-encrypted protocol, and do not record by default: however, the user can activate recording using a GDPR-compliant policy. Portable thermal cameras also have these characteristics, and can be used in a variety of settings: at the entrance to supermarkets, banks, post offices, in airports and stations, at factory gates and when entering public offices, and in all high density situations with flows of people in movement. The portable version (DS-2TP21B-6AVF/W) is wireless and uses 6 mm thermal lenses and visible image capture up to 8 Mpx. In case of alarm, a cursor indicates the hottest area of the subject on the thermal image, and the measured data is displayed at the sides of the screen (time, date and temperature). These devices enable security staff and gate keepers to safely identify - and without creating queues or crowding - high body temperature subjects, after which the latter can undergo testing with medical equipment.

Portable thermal cameras can also be a tool for the police when they are required to control restrictions on movement or check observance of quarantine measures: portable thermal cameras can check the temperature of one person at a time while maintaining a proper safe distance.
